Wicket turret of Sant’Ana, 1373, Lisboa

2013 Preventive Conservation

Elaboration of an intervention plan on the Wicket Turret of Sant'Ana*, a tower, which integrates the walls of the eastern part of the Cerca Nova or Cerca Fernandina, classified as a National Monument (1910), due to a project of alterations in a private building, adjacent to the monument, situated on the Calçada de Santana, a narrow street in Lisbon historic centre. This plan was made under the coordination of Eduardo do Carmo, conservator-restorer.

* Despite the limited information may be noted that the construction of this turret will have begun around 1373 by King Fernando, when building a new wall or fence, hence the name of cerca nova (new fence) or cerca fernandina (Fernando fence ), by contrast as the Moorish fence. This construction with a range of 100 hectares, where the masters João Fernandes and Vasco Brás have worked, will have taken three years. In 1676, the Wicket (see drawing, Júlio de Castilho, 1580), located between the Turret and the Tower of Sant'Ana, was demolished, giving rise to the current street of Santana.
