Tomb of Fernão Teles de Meneses, 17th c.

2012 Conservation and Restoration

Monumental tomb* from an unknown author (possibly Pedro Nunes Tinoco), erected in the memory of Fernão Teles de Meneses and his wife Maria de Noronha, a former Portuguese military, who was the 28th Governor of India [1581] and of the Algarve [1587]. This tomb belongs to the collection of the National Museum of Natural History and Science (Lisboa). The work was done under the coordination of Eduardo do Carmo.

* This mausoleum, from the former Jesuit novitiate (Novitiate of the Lark), is a monument made of ten elements of red marble and white limestone lioz micro-crystalline, including one cross, with different shapes, size and type, with a polished finish, over two dark grey marble elephants.
