Large cross of Hope, 16-17th cs., Lisboa

2018 Conservation and Restoration

Conservation and restoration of the sculpture Large Cross of Hope*, from the collection of the Portuguese Ancient Arts Museum kept at the Museum of Lisboa, sculpted on one side the image of Crucified Christ, and on the other, Our Lady of Mercy. Work done by Pedro Lino, sculptor and stone conservator technician.

* By council decision the cross was taken from the original site (Largo do Cruzeiro) in January, 1835. The location of these crosses in Lisbon seems to correspond to the old city bypass lines, working, in practice, as administrative boundaries which, from the popular religiosity point of view, helped to protect the inhabitants from the plague and the earthquakes.
