Staircase, 17th c., Corpus Christi Convent, Lisbon

2023 Preventive Conservation

Execution of a report describing the operation of dismantling a flight of stairs with stone steps and respective lower and upper landings, existing in the former Convent of Corpus Christi*, of the Order of Barefooted Carmelites. Work carried out by Sandra Alves and Joana Shearman, conservators-restorers.

* The former Corpus Christi Convent of Barefoot Carmelite Religious is located in downtown Lisbon, occupying one entire block of the Pombaline network. It has its origins in a chapel founded by D. Luísa de Gusmão in 1648, in gratitude for King D. João IV having escaped an attack that would take place during the Corpus Christi procession, in which the king was included. In 1661 she donated it to the friars to build a convent there. Upon her death, in 1666, she was buried in the church and transferred to the Grilas Convent only in 1713, as was her wish. In August 1833 the convent was ordered to vacate, being closed on April 14th, 1834 and subsequently sold in 1835. ©
