Abstract
Industrial and technical heritage includes objects, equipment and installations that are material witnesses of the industry history and technology development. The conservation of this heritage is, when compared to traditional cultural heritage, relatively new and, consequently, the conservation methodologies are yet to be developed. The specific characteristics of this type of heritage, constituted by large scale objects sometimes with operational mechanisms and placed in uncontrolled environments, such has hangars and factories implies the definition of new conservation treatments. The conservation aims to preserve the material characteristics maintaining the wear and usage marks, a part of the objects history. These marks allow to increase the knowledge on the industry and technology history. In order to establish a conservation methodology, that has to consider the specific characteristics of this heritage, it is fundamental to identify the materials, the fabrication techniques and the corrosion processes. In this work it is presented the case study of a 20th century power plant in Levada de Tomar – Portugal constituted by three groups of generators that produced electricity through steam, hydro and diesel. The equipment is composed by different materials such as iron and copper alloys, coatings, wood and textile.
