Pedro Nunes, novo ceo e novas estrellas

2002 Creation

This collection was inspired in the exhibition Pedro Nunes (1502-1578) – novas terras, novos mares e o que mays he: novo ceo e novas estrellas, held at the Portuguese National Library for the five hundredth anniversary celebration of the birth of Pedro Nunes, internationally renowned in the field of mathematics and its application to cosmography and naval sciences. The collection drew inspiration from geometrical drawings published in:

  • the Portuguese translation of The Treaty of the Sphere*;
  • a leaf from Opera, printed in Basel, Henricpetrina, 1566;
  • a leaf from De Crepusculis, printed in Lisbon, Luís Rodrigues, 1542.

* A 13thc. work from Johannes de Sacrobosco to which Pedro Nunes added comments and annotations and then published in Lisbon helped by the printer Germão Galhardo [1537].
