Arethusa Fountain, 3rd-4th cs. BC (?), Sintra

2017 Conservation and Restoration

Conservation and restoration of an Etruscan terracotta sculpture in relief depicting Arethusa*, framed by egg-frieze at its upper part. This sculpture, from the collection of the Palace of Monserrate** (Sintra), was part of one fountain. Work done by António Morgado, stone conservator technician.

* In Greek mythology, Arethusa was a nymph who fled from her home in Arcadia beneath the sea and came up as a fresh water fountain on the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily.

** Park and Palace of Monserrate (19th c.) were classified as Property of Public Interest (1975), integrated in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, classified as World Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO, 1995)
