Archaeological structures, 14th c., Fernandina Fence

2022 Preventive Conservation

Elaboration of a previous report and proposal for the treatment and maintenance of structures belonging to the Fernandina Fence* and also other elements of patrimonial value, such as vestments of archaeological interest, inserted in a private building** in the Alfama district, in Lisbon. Work carried out by Sandra Alves, conservator-restorator.

* Fence Fernandina was built in the 70's. XIV, by King D. Fernando, to replace the Moorish Fence, expanding the perimeter of the city. For this reason it was also called Cerca Nova (New Fence). This structure was recognized and classified as a National Monument in 1910, with IPA Nº PT031106120023, by Decree of the Government Gazette in publication Nº 136/1910, Série I of 06-23-1910, issued by the Ministry of Public Works, Commerce and Industry with the designation of Casle of Saint Jorge and Remains of the Fences of Lisbon.

** The private building, of residential and commercial nature, was built incorporating fractions of the wall of the aforementioned fence, including the base of one of the two towers that would have existed in Largo Chafariz de Dentro (Alfama, Lisbon) and the access staircase to the chemin de ronde. In an adjoining building were the Baths of Alfama, managed in the medieval Christian period by Cistercian monks from the Monastery of Alcobaça.
