Conservation and restoration of the Royal Yacht "Sirius", built in 1876 and belonging to King D. Luís, on display in the Barge Pavillion at the Navy Museum.
The Royal Yacht "Sírius" was commissioned by King Luís I and Queen Maria Pia in 1876 and launched on April 14, 1877. Construction took place at the Royal Galeotas Shed, Rua da Junqueira (Lisbon), under the direction of its commanding officer, Lieutenant-Captain Carlos Sousa Folque Possolo, and was overseen by Tomás António Gonçalves, master carpenter at the Navy Arsenal, and Diogo Jorge Batalha, construction demonstrator at the Naval Academy. After several experiments and already rigged as a caique, the yacht was presented to Queen Maria Pia. By 1887, the yacht Sírius had been rigged as a two-masted schooner, and a few years later, it was handed over to the Naval Academy for sailing instruction for midshipmen. In the 1930s, it passed to the Navy Officers and Aspirants Nautical Club (CNOCA) and, after a few years on loan to the Naval Brigade, the yacht returned to the Navy, being used again for sailing instruction and boarding training by cadets at the Naval School.
