Abstract
Conservation and restoration intervention methodologies are usually based on the prior discussion of concepts such as minimal intervention, process reversibility, and material compatibility. However, prior to these concepts, the objectives of the conservation intervention must be defined, which also strongly depend on the preservation context of the objects – objects in use, on museum display, etc. These contexts condition the objectives of the intervention and can lead to the enhancement of a particular component of the objects – aesthetic or historical. The challenge for the conservator-restorer is, therefore, to enhance the information of each object in a given component, according to its context. This condition requires, in addition to a commitment to material conservation, an adaptation of the methodology, especially the cleaning, protection, and display processes, which act as drivers for the investigation of new intervention methods.
